Battling Bad Habits, Part 2

Setting goals is an essential part of success, especially SMART goals. SMART goals – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely – give structure to aspirations. They provide a sense of direction, helps organize resources and time, and push you further toward reaching objectives. However, setting SMART goals is not enough. Goals can be quickly and easily derailed by bad habits. So, in addition to setting goals, there must be a plan for eliminating any bad habits that prevent those goals from being reached. While this may sound easy, breaking bad habits is harder than it seems. But it can be done!

Battling Bad Habits, Part 1

When January rolls around, many people write down goals for the year ahead. These are often SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely, which are found to garner better results. Winners (those who achieve goals) and losers (those who don’t achieve goals) often have the same goals. They make a plan to achieve those goals. They get an accountability partner. They are firm and resolute. And yet, losers don’t achieve the goals they set while winners do. The primary reason is that losers are undermined by bad habits. It helps to understand why bad habits are more persistent than will power, determination and intent… and what can be done about it.

Have you felt that not everyone at your company or organization is equally productive? Some – a few – are significantly more productive than everyone else combined. While that observation is anecdotal, it occurs a lot. So much so that it has even been studied empirically by a professor at Yale University who found that it is, in fact, a real phenomena and dubbed the theory Price’s Law.
